Themistocles and the Walls of Paraeus
Sparta wanted to prevent the taking of Athens by means of infantry. The general Themistocles who had led the Athenians against the Persians was well loved by the Spartans for his prowess and battle during that war. These walls not only protected Athens but linked it by a walled corridor to the port of Paraeus, which meant that Athens could always be supplied by sea.
