How Alex the Parrot Learned to Recite Numbers in a Row

Only two chimpanzees and Alex the Parrot have passed Irene Tepperberg's test of being able to recite numbers in a row. The criteria for what counts as counting is essentially the same as one would apply to children learning to count with counting words. So according to Irene's stricter and potentially more human criteria, only three individual animals have managed to count.
