The concept for the operation originated four years earlier in a memorandum signed by Britain's director of naval intelligence Admiral John Godfrey. It is believed that the actual memorandum was written by his assistant Lieutenant Ian Fleming who went on to write the James Bond series of novels. Sicily fell to the Allies more quickly than anticipated and with fewer casualties than feared. The result was a repositioning of German forces to meet the perceived threat to the Balkans.
