We're Attuned to the Negativity
There's a reason why our psychology is attune to negative things. Bad things that go wrong in the day are remembered much longer than good ones. So there must be something like an evolved psychology to story telling. And since writing's only been around five thousand years, surely, and language probably a hundred thousand or more, surely, stories have been with us long before writing.
