Hampton Smith and Sidney Johnson

Hampton Smith had a reputation for being more short-tempered and brutal than most. He personally delivered several beatings to Mary Turner until finally the previous year, her husband Hayes also an employee threatened him. Three days later, three men with Sidney Johnson as their leader took a gun from Hampton Smith's house and murdered him with it. A mob was formed to find and kill the culprits. They found their first victim early the next morning. That morning Saturday Hayes Turner was arrested and brought to jail. Later in the day around the time Hayes was being kidnapped and killed, another black man, Eugene Smith who was completely uninvolved in any of this, was taken by a mob and hanged
