Jim simons was the pioneer in a very different approach. He developed predictive algarithms wawayway before mark zuckeberg and selicon valley embraced that approach. Early on, they couldn't put on the trades with their system, but their automated system told them what to buy and what to sell. It's all about looking for patterns and looking for short term patterns. They do the best in periods of panic because human behavior seems to repeat itself.
