In the 19th century, people were trying to make sense of electromagnetism in terms of like atoms and forces. Now they realize that reality is made of fields which are ruled by differential equations. This field ontology is so much better at making sense of electromagnetic force than particles. I think we're going to experience the same in philosophy of mind.
