The Importance of Slavery in the History of New Netherlands

The elite Dutch families are the wealth that are passed down. The story of slavery, even though it's not normally thought of as being a major part of these families' identities, is something that I think readers should reconsider. So they are making space for these European colonists in order to create wealth for themselves and their families. But at the same time, even though during the Dutch period you have enslaved people who are able to gain their freedom - this is something that gets cut off.
