The Problem With Paul's Call to Be an Apostle
Paul wasn't a disciple of Jesus. He's not one of the original band of Jesus' apostles, he has this reputation for persecuting Christians. So when he suddenly says, oh, well, I've been called by Jesus to be an apostle, he's understandably met with a certain amount of suspicion and fear indeed. And he can do little more than appeal to the fact that he has this calling and appeal to the authority of the message which he proclaims. The problem is, if he had just toed the Jerusalem line, as it were, it probably wouldn't have been difficult for him, but he's a radical.
