How much can the president put his or her thumb on the scale of the economy and move things, especially in the fairly short term? If I look at what a president does and how they spend their day, it's hard to see how they have much effect at all. Under this president, the fiscal stimulus was a useful thing and it probably saved. The unemployment rate might be a percentage point or even a little bit more lower as a result of what he did. But right now, for instance, I think a majority of economists would say that more fiscal stimulus is a good thing.
