In the early sixties, Mark O'Brien wanted to be a writer. He tried his hand at journalism in San Francisco's beat section of the paper. But he quickly realised that it wasn't as glamorous or exciting as he'd imagined. The book is set during this time and shows him trying out different careers before settling on writing.
