Nelson's Disappointment With the African People
I don't read it as that she's uninterested in the African people in the commune because there are several characters that she says that she respects and likes a lot. She is actually sensitive to their autonomy in a way that Nelson is not. I see her departure partially as a response to his transformation, partially just a function of her despair that he's transformed into this like totally inaccessible person. But we also do see he loves William Blake for example.
