The three kidnappers were planning to steal a six passenger plane. None of them had any experience flying any planes. Jim also wrote in his diary about how he thought about being a teacher one day. They didn't want to do high schoolers or middle schoolers because they were more likely to fight back. And the reason that Jim ultimately went through with this plot was because he fell in love with a woman named Eileen Kelty.
