The Fall of the Roman Empire
The fall of the Roman Empire produced a real change in material circumstances for that poor peasant farmer. The system that replaced the complex Roman economy was far simpler and far more locally oriented. In essence, the Empire fractured, it split along regional lines. Waiting for subsistence in large part replaced economic specialization. Consumer goods grew less complicated.
