Is There a Matrix of Goals in Training?

I find when there's a very clear goal that I'm training for, then I have the motivation and it's really exciting. But if I'm just kind of training to stay fit and for maintenance, then I don't try nearly as hard. Upping my weight on a weighted hang isn't enough for goal for me. I need something that I'm really excited to get out and do. That's like the formula that works the best.
