i was a statistics major at princeton. I got involved in becoming on the ratings committee in 19 86, while i was in college. There's a procedure in statistics which is what's called maximum likelihood estimation. The idea is that you can write out a probability of of the outcome of a game, givein the players raidings. And then determine what those unknown ratings are.
