The only way to get into manhattan at this time was a bridge over the harlem iver. Vanderbilt and the new york central railroad controlled that bridge. The railroads had depot in exchange place in jersey city, but they all had these depots along hudson river. As passengers got out, train stations also owned t o ferry service, and those ferries would cross the hudson.
