Pliny the Roman philosopher really went to town on this topic. Menstrual blood turned wine, sour and hives of bees died. Sex during menstruation was an absolute no-no. The consequences were dire. According to Pliny, the child so conceived could have leprosy or red hair. But it probably won't surprise you to learn that this extract from a medical text at the time was written by a woman.
