HART's Manuscript on English Spelling
Thomas Smith was an early advocate of phonetic spelling. John Hart produced a massive text on the same subject in English around the same time. HART shared Smith's view that English words should be spelled phonetically. He also recommended the assignment of specific letters to specific sounds, such as DOUTH and DEAT.
