In 1823, McIntosh was kind of working on a sustainability project. He wanted to find uses for the coal tar naptha that was produced in gas works. Naptha is an oily liquid that's produced when natural gas condensates and coal tar used in production distills into the desired gas. This often reads as though it was kind of a eureka moment where he goes, Oh, I could use this. That's why that cracked me up.
