The Power of Practice
I think it's helpful to recognize that sometimes the thing that seems most ungainly, strangest in a work is often the thing that has to be nurtured. Maybe the story needs to be less neat and less polished and this other thing has to be allowed to erupt. And I worry about with my older MFA students and my PhD students is they don't always look like they're having fun. But almost everybody who devotes a lot of their time to writing is doing it because at some point they got a lot of pleasure from reading and some pleasure from writing. Even even if you're writing about dark material, it's rewarding to you in some way.
