The Order to Forage Liberally on the Country
In 1864, General Sherman ordered his troops to pillage the countryside of Georgia. John Sutter: Foraging was seen as a way for Union soldiers to crush southern morale. He says it helped instill terror in civilian population and chipped away at Georgians will to resist. Sutter: But while Sherman's forces were plundering the countryside, they were not fighting.
