The relationship between parents and kids plainly doesn't end when the kid becomes 12 or is out of the house. I think with parenting as with teaching or coaching, there's potentially more downside than upside. The poet Philip Larkin has this wonderful terrible, terrible in the sense of f***ing up your mom and dad. They fill you up with the faults they had and add some extra just for you.
