J.A. Austin was a philosopher at Oxford who went on to work in military intelligence during the Second World War. He used his wartime experience to show that science and philosophy can be co-ordinated, rather than one person or group of people discovering all the facts by sheer genius. The author says he is 'too lazy' to find out more about Austin's method for understanding language.
