The Brownian Motion of Life

Organized life doesn't actually break the second law of thermodynamics. What biological systems have managed to do is not to extract energy from noise, but rather to use noise to extract energy where it ordinarily wouldn't be accessible. So in a surprising turn of events, Brownian motion has led us back to Robert Brown's original curiosity.
