When medical societies reorganized in 1900, there were 8,000 members and then 70,000 10 years later. So it was basically like, you need to get verified. You can't just go around saying you're a local doctor. And so this whole structure forms a hierarchy of networks that are coordinated by small groups of influential physicians. The people who are at the top are the ones who get to decide then what medical practice should look like. These networks are now used to mount campaigns against competition, contract medicine and universal healthcare.
