Olive yong's story mostly takes place in the shan state of northeast burma, or manmar. Along the china border, there was a place about the size of lebanon called kokang in mandarin. Kokang iis interesting in a whole lot of ways because it's the only predominantly ethnic chinese place in mianmar and there's a reason for this too. We back during the last years of the ming dynasty.
