In part, like the piles of suit cases and eye glasses and shoes belonging to holoquust victims that we see at memorial museums, a small fragment of history that has survived. Music is perhaps one of the most valuable means of remembering that we have - it can't just sit in a museum. It has to be sung or played or otherwise brought back to life.
