500 years ago humans had excess space for 32 teeth but are now lucky to have space to fit 28, with wisdom teeth extraction becoming a right of passage, and premolar extractions all too common. The idea that this is genetic is on par with flat earthers. In the blink of an evolutionary eye, something very significant has occurred under our noses which we really don’t want to face up to. Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. John Mew, Mike has challenged long-standing assumptions in orthodontics, arguing that crooked teeth are not a genetic inevitability, but predominantly the result of environmental factors — particularly poor oral posture and lifestyle changes in the modern era.
