The High Fever of Speculation in Bombay
In 1864-65, Bombay was not yet a great city. It had already made a name as a major centre of trade and commerce. The length of the railway tracks built by the great Indian Peninsula railways was 591 miles. Cotton factories numbered only seven. A 20-word telegraph message to Sway's canal would cost between 3 and 5 pounds. There was only one steam navigation company that ferried fortnightly mail.
