Mavis Galant, the Canadian Short Story Writer
Mavis Galant published 116 stories in the New Yorker throughout her career, putting her in the same league as John Cheever or John Updike. She never made lots of money out of it, she wrote two novels, but I don't think they're as good as the short stories. A funny story about how that came to happen was she left Montreal in 1950 to make it in Europe as a writer. The Asurbeck often described Fran Lieberwitz, the New York commentator and comic writer, who said in the 90s that Mavis Galant was the best short story writer in English.
