The Power of Speaking Across Lines of Difference
I encourage Americans to understand that this republic is not perfect, but in our ambitions to become more perfect, we have to do more engagement. There's a great Frederick Douglas quote where he says, I'll work with all to do right and none to do wrong. He speaks to the power of talking across lines of difference to accomplish things. Just got back from Ireland a few months ago, and didn't realize how big of an impact he had there. Cab driver told my wife, I don't believe in God, but I believe in Martin Luther King. I believe Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and Frederick Douglass.
