The Importance of the Viewport on Wide Websites

I'm seeing some clients ask, what, why don't we use the whole screen real estate and sometimes it does look strange. And both you and I were advocates of single column websites which make you focus on what's important for people to accomplish their task instead of throwing so much stuff out there. That's not going to help them get along with solving whatever they came to do. So like 700 pixel wide website leaves too much white space. We could talk for hours about that.
