The Words of the Preacher
The poem depicts the inevitable aging and death of the youth who is addressed in chapter 11, verse nine. We can never fully penetrate the fog of the scene, but we realize with a shudder that we are descrying our own obliteration. This is all summed up in the preacher's great motto, vap of vapors, says the preacher, all is vapor. But returning to the same point, those now familiar words are far more avocative and powerful.
