The History of Humanity

Most of the people who ended up committing these terrible acts were terrifyingly normal. They did it out of hate, fear, pride, or just to be accepted by superiors. I would bet the hundreds of species we've directly caused to go extinct wish we were actually inhumane. People today are even talking as if a civil war is on the horizon and yet we don't think massacres could happen today. Given the history of our species I am highly skeptical things could not get out of control as they so often have in the past.
