The media, I would say, is the main way that societal norms are reinforced. When children were exposed to violence on television or violent video games, they were more likely to be aggressive towards their peers. And we can make that same connection with the presentation of singleness as a concept in TV and movies. Our society also makes it much harder for us who are not in relationships. We feel shame when we feel like we have violated a social norm.
