Right to Work Is Aimed at Defending the Union
Under federal law, you don't have to join a union even its in the work place. A right to work is aimed at defending the union by saying "you don't need to pay your fair share" for negotiating contracts. You get all the benefits of that union contract: decent wages, benefit packages and a leave a grievance process. But it's also designed to starve unions of any sort of financial resources so they can do the work needed to enforce contracts on the job.
