The Importance of Science in the Tobacco Industry
In the late 80s, scientific evidence became overwhelming that secondhand smoke also killed people. That's when the tobacco industry got really nasty and did some of the more ugly and nefarious things they did. One project was to recruit scientists to be to defend tobacco. They could get journalists to present both sides of the story. This technique was highly effective.
