McDonald's - What Was She Wearing?
Stella Liebeck sued McDonald's after she was burned by a cup of coffee. A jury awarded her $2.9 million in compensatory damages and 2.7 million in punitive damages. On appeal, the judge reduced the punitive damages to 640,000 which are triple the compensatory damages. "The entire purpose of the system that we set up in the 1960s and the 1970s is this sort of packed between regulators and corporations," he says.
