In the late 90s and early 2000s, Java was still considered a cool language by a certain number of developers out there. And they were fine using Java. Towards the middle 2000s people started to realize, okay, there's a lot of other cool languages out there that we're not getting in Java. So as a case study for developing a language on the JVM, let's look at JRuby.
