The Importance of Humility in the Story of the Desert Fathers

There is a tradition in both the Catholic and Orthodox churches to discredit certain types of saint stories as clear fabrications. In medieval storytelling, there are some stories that are very clearly Christian legends that are not lives of saints. There was a concerted effort to kind of separate the wheat from the chaff with an encyclopedic book starting in the 16th century which culminated in the 20th.
