Klein changed the idea a little bit by making these extra dimensions small. And I don't know whether he was lying to have extra freedom in those dimensions or not. They have an extra dimension because all the functions on your space are down here, not up there. So that's fine. That's not really an extra dimension. It's an extra dimension which doesn't carry any more information.
