The Chinatown Tour
In 18 90, jacob ries published how the other half lives. It was an early influential work of photojournalism that drew attention to income and equality in new york city but also further demonized the chinese. The main character of her short story, its wavering image, is an a mixed race, white and chinese woman who lives with her chinese father. But then a white journalist, mark carson, comes to chinatown on a mission. He takes advantage of her community pride to get exclusive access into usually secretive chinatown. One beautiful evening, he tells her she is white, not chinese. According to him, she cannot be both.
