The Importance of Reconsidering US Financial Sanctions

The U.S. should reconsider the use of so-called symbolic financial sanctions, says author Daniel McDowell. Use of financial sanctions against issuers of potential rival currencies in particular China and to Taiwan should face a higher bar of scrutiny, he adds. Even a small targeted sanctions program provides information to our adversaries about their vulnerabilities, Dr. McDowell argues. Congress was also told that sanctions should be used with caution because pressuring China with sanctions probably won't even work.
