The Smithsonian's Responsibility for Human Remains

In 1989, Congress passed the National Museum of American Indian Act. That required the Smithsonian to inventory its Native American human remains. So far, the Smithsonian says it has offered to repatriate about 6,000 sets of human remains related to Native tribes and communities.
