How Much Time Do You Feel You Have?
The key factors in any sort of explore or exploit problem is this question of how much time you feel you have. If I'm committing a bunch of money into Tesla to use your example and it's going to be locked in for, let's say, 50 years, then it probably makes sense to do a lot more fundamental research. But if I'm just going to be parking my money there for a month or six months or something, then it's more important to just try different things out and commit on the basis of what we already know.
