The Transformation of Augustine and the City of God

Augustine's generation of Catholic clergymen lived through a dramatic transition in history. Three generations after Constantine's conversion, they had embraced a severe form of Christianity. They adopted celibacy and frequently asceticism. The consequences of this transition can still be felt today. We continue to misunderstand Roman religion as an uncouth scrimmage between Homeric and Virginian gods.
