The Afro-American Association was a challenge on the Berkeley campus because there just weren't that many black students. So they started recruiting on local community college campuses. Huey Newton's family was from rural Louisiana, Bobby Seale from East Texas. They brought with them a different kind of sensibility: armed self-defense.
