The way that I see physical reality, it's kind of a subset of something larger, but it's also cut off. The best way to understand this is to think about one dimension lower than ours. We have we live in three dimensions. What would a universe look like if it was only two dimensional completely flat actually physicists use this thought exercise a lot. And the inhabitants of this universe are called flatlanders. This universe doesn't even have to be that big. It can just be right in front of you, like a one by one square or something.
