Sonic 3: A Cold Open
Sonic 3 features a 'cold open' that has never been seen in the series before. The game starts with Sonic flying down, or standing on Tails' biplane to tornado. He leaps off plane and runs back on - doing his supersonic flying thing because he is now supersonic. This establishes something which has never be seen in theseries up to this point. I'm going to say the C-word, continuity.
